The Sinhala-Tamil New Year is the most awaited period of the year for Sri Lankan, Sinhala, and Tamil people. The Sinhala-Tamil new year (Aluth Awurudda) is celebrated mainly in Buddhist and Hindu households according to their own religious and cultural rituals. The new year begins with the transition of the sun from Pisces to Aries. Which marks the end of the harvest season with the pleasant call of "Koha" (Asian Koel) and the spectacular blossom. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a well-celebrated cultural festival that has been celebrated since ancient times and that brings all Lankans together. Families undertake a variety of rituals according to the exact timings that are determined by astrological calculations, from lighting the fire to making the milk rice to entering into the first business transaction. Milk rice, oil cakes (Kewum), Kokis, and bananas are the must-have sweets among the many sweets on the New Year table at home. Upon completion of the mandatory rituals, families visit their neighbors, friends, and relations and share Awrudu food with each other. People engage in different kinds of New Year games and activities, such as "olinda keliya" "raban", "onchili waaram," etc., and all the villagers participate in New Year celebration events, which include different types of fun games.
