This renowned Hindu Temple is situated 5 km away from the Nuwara Eliya town on the Nuwara Eliya - Welimada Road. Distance from the Temple to Hakgala Gardens is 1 km.
Related to the fabled Ramayana, the present site of the Kovil is believed to be built at yet another location where King Ravana kept Princess Sita hidden. Locals say that there had been an expansive Ashoka (Ixora) garden nearby. The legend goes on to say that Sita’s blindness was cured after treatment here, hence this area is known by the name Seetha Eliya. A charming stream where Sita is said to have bathed, flows by, while a stone bench where she used to sit as well as a footprint believed to be Hanuman’s are also seen on the rock face there.
