The reservoir, situated in the Kadadora GN Division, can be viewed best from the Kadadora Viewing Centre on the road leading to Kotmale New Town, from Gampola, via Ulapane. 


Construction commenced on 04 February 1979 by building a dam across Kotmale Oya at Kadadora. The 352-foot-high, 1927-foot-long dam joins the mountains Kadadora Kanda and Thispane Kanda, forming a 2,360-acre reservoir built under the Accelerated Mahaweli Scheme.
