This Pothana Raja Maha Viharaya situated on the Sigiriya village 1 ½ Km away from temple junction on way Dambulla, Sigiriya road.
According to archeologists this cave temple belongs between 500 – 1000 Ac. According to the inscription inside the temple King Bakathissa offered this caves for the Monks. Other believes that King Kashyapas’ Sister Uppala devi had donated this caves for the use of the Monks.
Archeological evidence suggests that people who lived in this area consumption sails as food. This temple is situated in an attractive mountain. The most significant feature of this temple with 12 Spacious Caves and five Ponds situated on the rock surface. When caves was cleared for conservation, two human Skeleton were founded which are now displayed at the Archeological museum at Sigiriya and Colombo. There is a spacious cave in the central which was probably used to grind chilly as evidence by the presence of grinding stone. This site was excavated and conserved by the archeological Department.
