On the Matale-Dambulla A-9 road 4 kms from the Hunganwila junction located on dam side road is the reservoir. The embankment used here is the first concrete dam in Sri Lanka which has been used with the intention of increasing the amount of the water level of Ambanganga through which the Kala Wewa is filled.
This reservoir is of 48 miles raised area including 20,500 of high water level 120,800. The top of the embankment is 121,000. The length measures 402ft, height 102ft and width 80ft. The capacity of regulator foot extent 91000 ft entire foot extent 12400. The reservoir supplies an area of 720 ft acres. The Ebbawela Regulator is 18 ft width, 7 ft high with 4 doors and the power of water supply is 7450 sqft.
This water is diverted towards the Bowatenna reservoir and the power station and from the other side through the Wemedilla reservoir towards Matale and Anuradhapura paddy area and other cultivations.
This location at a stunning spot in Matale and was initiated in 1950 by Edinborough of UK. The Nalanda Oya begins from Matale with water from Bilagalala, Asgirikanda, Makulussala, Ambokkala, Arangala etc. The entire length of the Nalanda Oya is 15 miles.
During the last 5-6 years the Nalanda reservoir has not been renovated and now lies fragmented. Moreover, due to the fact of not being prepared for the heavy rains problems arose in opening of mud sluice which also paved the way towards rapid water levels that gushed down which was later rectified. Accordingly this remediated on 4th Dec 2013. Naula not only nourishes paddy cultivations but also is a major supplier of electricity and supplier of drinking water for 5000 families.
