This University is located in central Kandy, 6 kms off the west bordering Mount Hanthana and the Mahaweli River creating a picturesque environment. The present campus pavilion was done by Srimath Patric Abercombi and can be considered as a natural park continuing along the same lines as that of at Royal Botanical Gardens.
In 1942 the University of Peradeniya was initiated and today consists of 12,000 students (local and expatriates) studying for their first and post graduate degrees of both. It is considered the biggest and the most reputed University in Sri Lanka.  


Prestigious Faculties and institutions make up the University of Peradeniya and is well-known for its contribution to contemporary Sri Lankan heritage especially in History and Drama. An immense amount of students including local and internationally renowned professionals and graduates are alumni of the University. It also has the biggest research institute in Sri Lanka.
The architectural aspects of the Peradeniya campus has been a major attraction for tourists. Its of great architectural value and has been constructed through the wisdom of Srimath Ivor Jennings and talented Architect Shirley de Alwis. 


The architecture surrounding the University of Peradeniya creates an ideal venue for research as well as the serene nature around in its environment and climatic conditions including the nearby Mahaweli.


The underground electricity supply system of the University grounds, the open stage of world renowned Professor Ediriweera Sarathchandra, Kuudu plant that takes the shape of an attractive umbrella,  Roborosia plants that decorates the surrounding areas of the entire university garden, Yellow colour flowers of wondrous beauty, flower vines of splendour and many other plants, the art studio according to contemporary design, the Akbar bridge, the sports ground, the indoor stadium and many other facilities add immense value to the University’s locale, not forgetting it’s incredibly attractive location at the foot of Hanthana.
