This is the birthplace of world-renowned Ceylon Tea. From Peradeniya Galha Junction, travel via Peradeniya University and continue for 22km on Galaha Road to reach this historic tea estate with its striking scenery. Alternatively, one can travel 19km from Gampola, and 5km from Galaha, Deltota to reach this location. Loolkandura Estate has an elevation of 2300 ft. from sea level.
Tea as a cash crop was first cultivated in Ceylon by James Taylor, a British national who came here in 1852. By 1867 his crop has expanded to 19 acres. A full-fledged tea factory was established at the Loolkandura Estate by 1872. ‘Ceylon Tea’ first found its way to London markets by 1875.
Taylor, aged 57, died in Ceylon, and was interred at the Mahaiyawa Cemetery. In accordance with his written request, a memorial was erected at the Loolkandura Estate.
