This is situated at the University Junction at the turn to Galaha Road near Peradeniya Bridge on the Colombo-Kandy Road.
The horseshoe-shaped, 147-acre (60-hectare) stretch of land has an elevation of 1,600 feet above sea level, and approximately 4,000 plant species. It receives over 1.2 million visitors annually. The Orchid House, Fernery, Green Lawn, Lanka Pond, Spice Garden, Flower Garden, Double Coconut Avenue, Palmyra Palm Avenue, Cabbage palm Avenue, Gadener’s Monument, Cactus House, Bamboo Collection are some of its main attractions.
Plant classification, carrying out ethno botanical and plant conservation functions, research, managing and development of national herbaria and associated institutions, disseminating associated information, creating learning opportunities and experiences to the public are some of its main concerns. The Garden is one of the largest tourist attractions in the country.
