World Heritage

Four sites of the Central Province in Sri Lanka have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage, namely, the ancient city of Sigiriya (1982), the Golden Temple of Dambulla (1991), the sacred city of Kandy (1988), the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka (2010).

Kandy District

Kandy District is one of the attractive districts located in the Central Province in Sri Lanka. Kandy city is the capital city which is the second largest city in the country after Colombo. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka.

Matale District

Matale District is located in the northern part of the Central Province, Sri Lanka and it is home for three World Heritage sites; Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Fortress and Knuckles Range which attract more tourists

NuwaraEliya District

Nuwara Eliya district is located in the southern part of the Central Province. Nuwara Eliya city is the capital city which was built entirely during the 19th century by the British. It is called as “Little England” since it riches with the old colonial building, attractive landscaping and cool climate.

Opening ceremony of the new office building and the innovative Tourism Information Center


Department of Trade, Commerce and Tourism of Central Province has opened new tourist information centre at No: 1054, Getambe, Peradeniya.

The opening was held on 15th Saturday, February, 2014 with the participation of the Chief guest Hon. Nimal Siripala de Silva, Minister of Irrigation and Water Management by the invitation of Hon. Sarath Ekanayake Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism of the Central Province.

The Department has arranged to cater the demand of present information needs of the tourist in many ways. Self-service information system allows visitors to search and obtain necessary information by themselves.

 Information about tourist attraction places, accommodation, tour guides, tourist facilities and many more areas can be obtained free of charge at the Information Centre.

Moreover, Videos, images and other digital data can be collected for future reference. Well trained staffs of officers are ready to provide efficient service at all.


Department of Trade Commerce and Tourism of the Central Province with the collaboration of the Municipal Council, Nuwaraeliya Commemorate the World Tourism Day on 27th September at Nuwaraeliya with presence of the Chief guest Hon. Tikiri Kobbakaduwa, Governor of the Central Province.
