World Heritage

Four sites of the Central Province in Sri Lanka have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage, namely, the ancient city of Sigiriya (1982), the Golden Temple of Dambulla (1991), the sacred city of Kandy (1988), the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka (2010).

Kandy District

Kandy District is one of the attractive districts located in the Central Province in Sri Lanka. Kandy city is the capital city which is the second largest city in the country after Colombo. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka.

Matale District

Matale District is located in the northern part of the Central Province, Sri Lanka and it is home for three World Heritage sites; Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Fortress and Knuckles Range which attract more tourists

NuwaraEliya District

Nuwara Eliya district is located in the southern part of the Central Province. Nuwara Eliya city is the capital city which was built entirely during the 19th century by the British. It is called as “Little England” since it riches with the old colonial building, attractive landscaping and cool climate.

 "Nelu" Flowers ( Strobilanthes spp.) which bloom once in 12-14 years are now in full bloom in the Horton Plains.

Local and Foreign tourists visit this wonder of nature with highest interest. 

Last time in 2001 Nelu bloomed. If you miss this opportunity in this time, you will have to wait till 2025-2026 time to see those white, pink and yellowish carpet of Nelu flowers again. 


Inter  Provincial Entrepreneur Exchange Programme.

Central and Northern Provinces began to establish entrepreneur exchange programme between Northern and Central Provinces. 
Two days exhibition declared opened by the Governor of Central Province Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa on 30th November   2013.
Small and medium scale entrepreneurs of Tourism, Agriculture, Trade and Food industries from both provinces were participated for the exhibition.

The programme was conducted with the advice of Hon. Sarath Ekanayake, Chief Minister of the Central Province.
Regional Economic Development Agency and Nucleus Foundation were organized the event. 
Tour guide license issued  ceremony was held on  2013 December 13 at the Hotel School,Mathale.


Department of Trade Commerce and Tourism of the Central province commemorates the World Tourism Day on 27th September at Sigiriya Meuseum Premises with the presence of the Chief guest Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Governor of the Central Province.

The world tourism day – 2013 activities are not only to aim the theme “Water and Tourism – Protecting our common future” but also to support the national target of attracting 2.5 million tourists by the year 2016 mentioned in the “Mahinda Chintana – Vision for the future” the policy framework. Central Provincial tourism website www.tourism.cp.gov.lk was ceremonially lounged by the Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Governor of the Central Province here at Sigiriya. This website provides information on tourist destinations, services, and uniqueness of Central Provincial heritage and nature including the religious, archeological and cultural sites.

Furthermore, The Tourist information Centre, Dambulla was also declared open by the Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa to serve the national and international tourists in effective manner. The programme was conducted at the open area of the Museum Premises to provide close feeling of nature. Tree planting programme, poster competition, photographic competition and awareness programme were also lined to aware the theme of the tourism day. Live art competition was also held with the participants of schools present at that occasion. Several hundreds of school children from various parts of the Province were present at this occasion. Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and other guests were participated the award ceremony of the schools and open competitions conducted by the Department of Trade Commerce and Tourism of the Central Province.

Mayor of the Municipal Council, Dambulla, Hon. Jaliya Opatha, Secretary of the Chief Ministry and Ministry of Tourism Mr. M.S. Premawansha, Secretary of the Ministries of Agriculture and Health and other higher officials of the Provincial Council were also present at the Ceremony. Central Cultural Triangle, Municipal Council Dambulle, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Tour guides at Sigiriya and The Department of Education were also contributed the organization.
